Karen Harden has become a formidable advocate for Northumbria Police officers, combining expert knowledge, determined representation and genuine compassion for members facing some of the most difficult periods of their careers.

As vice chair of Northumbria Police Federation and its Conduct Lead for almost two years, Karen oversees one of the branch’s busiest and most demanding areas of work. She manages a significant misconduct caseload, allocates cases across the team and supports fellow representatives handling complex proceedings.

Despite these leadership responsibilities, Karen continues to carry an extensive personal caseload. Her priority is ensuring every member receives strong, informed and compassionate representation, regardless of the complexity of their circumstances.

Karen understands that officers often approach the Federation when their careers, wellbeing and reputations are under considerable pressure. She takes time to explain each stage of the process clearly, ensuring members understand what is happening and feel supported throughout.

Her meticulous preparation, professionalism and advocacy have secured outstanding results. One officer who received a no-case-to-answer outcome described Karen as patient and supportive, adding: “If I or anyone I know went through a similar incident, I would want Karen to back me up without a doubt.”

Another member began the year serving temporarily in a higher rank while facing what they described as a “horrific investigation”. With Karen’s support, the officer successfully completed the promotion process and ended the year looking positively towards the future.

Karen is equally committed to developing the representatives around her. She mentors colleagues, shares best practice and has created local conduct training and continuing professional development opportunities to strengthen the branch’s expertise.

Her investment in the team means members across Northumbria can access consistently high-quality representation. Fellow reps benefit not only from Karen’s technical knowledge but also from her practical understanding of how to support officers through sensitive and stressful situations.

Karen also represents the region as an Additional Seat member of the Police Federation’s National Council. She travels across the country to attend meetings and contribute to national discussions, rarely missing an opportunity to speak up for members.

In every setting, Karen presents a positive and professional image of the Federation. Her contributions are thoughtful and constructive, while her willingness to be forthright ensures members’ interests are never overlooked.
Approachable, empathetic and dependable, Karen responds promptly and handles sensitive information with absolute discretion. She regularly makes time outside normal working hours when members need reassurance or urgent assistance.

The feedback she receives demonstrates the profound effect this support can have. One officer cleared following a gross misconduct investigation described Karen as “tenacious, approachable and knowledgeable”, praising her for explaining the process, easing their concerns and responding whenever they needed help.

The member added: “I have been very lucky to have her in my corner."

Karen’s contribution has also received senior officer recognition. One commendation stated that her care, support and intervention had “quite literally changed and shaped the future career and life of a colleague”.

Northumbria Police Federation Chair Nick Munnelly said: “Karen brings strength and humanity to every case she handles. “She carries an enormous responsibility as our Conduct Lead, yet she still finds time to support colleagues, develop new representatives and improve the standard of our work across the branch. The outcomes she achieves matter, but so does the way she helps people regain their confidence and face the future.

“Karen does not simply represent members through a process. She reminds them that they are more than the allegation or investigation confronting them, and her intervention has genuinely changed lives.”
