Chief Inspector Danny Barnes has spent more than a decade making a positive difference to the lives and careers of police officers across Essex, earning a reputation as one of the branch's most respected, dedicated and trusted Federation representatives.

Earlier this year, Danny was unanimously chosen by both Essex Police Federation members and branch officers to receive the prestigious Sue Kelly Award, which recognises the representative who has provided exceptional support to members throughout the year. Presented at the branch's Bravery Awards in May, the accolade reflects not only the volume of work Danny undertakes but the professionalism, compassion and integrity he brings to every aspect of his role.

Having served as a Federation representative for 11 years, Danny has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to supporting members and ensuring they receive the representation and guidance they need. Throughout that time, he has regularly been elected by his peers to serve on the Branch Board, supporting full-time representatives across a range of portfolios including Local Policing, Operational Command and Equality.

Known for his fairness, professionalism and approachable nature, Danny has built strong relationships with colleagues across the force. Whether assisting an officer through a misconduct process, advising on regulations or helping members navigate difficult workplace challenges, he is always willing to provide support and reassurance when it is needed most.

Alongside his representative duties, Danny has made a significant contribution as Deputy Conduct and Performance Lead Officer (CAPLO), regularly stepping in to support the branch and ensuring members receive consistent representation and advocacy. His reliability and commitment have made him an invaluable asset to both Essex Police Federation and the officers it serves.

One of Danny's most impactful contributions came following an investigation in which he supported a vulnerable female officer who had been subjected to inappropriate and sexualised behaviour by a colleague. Determined to ensure lessons were learned and lasting change achieved, Danny worked alongside the force's professionalism leads to develop a survey examining the extent to which violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains an issue within the organisation.

This important work demonstrated not only his leadership but also his determination to improve workplace culture and ensure officers feel safe, supported and able to raise concerns. His efforts have helped strengthen collaboration between the Federation and the force while contributing to wider conversations about tackling unacceptable behaviour.

Recently promoted to the rank of chief inspector, Danny has continued to dedicate significant time and energy to supporting colleagues. Despite the demands of his new role, his commitment to Federation work remains as strong as ever. He regularly acts as a mentor and sounding board for less experienced representatives, while also offering valued advice and perspective to long-serving colleagues.

Through his leadership, integrity and genuine care for others, Danny has had a profound impact on countless officers throughout Essex. His dedication to supporting members, championing fairness and driving positive change embodies the very best values of the Police Federation and makes him a truly deserving nominee for Rep of the Year.
