Four Essex Police officers demonstrated exceptional courage, decisive action and unwavering professionalism during an incident that could easily have ended in tragedy. Their bravery directly saved the lives of two young children and prevented further unimaginable harm.
The incident began when Essex Police received multiple calls on Friday 22 November 2024, four from concerned friends and family of a woman who had sent them photographs showing significant bruising.
A further caller described the suspect’s behaviour as “unhinged”. Recognising the escalating risk, the duty sergeant upgraded the situation to an emergency response.
PC Robert Bradbrook, PC B, PC Charlotte Mixter and PC Charlie Jones arrived at the address alongside other officers. As they attempted to make contact, a distressed woman suddenly ran from the property screaming for help. Officers immediately moved to safeguard her and understand the unfolding situation.
As PC Bradbrook pushed open the front door, a young child ran out to safety. Inside, he saw an adult male seize a large knife and hold it to the throat of a young girl, later confirmed to be his daughter. The man dragged her deeper into the house and out of sight.
With no hesitation for their own safety, PCs Bradbrook, Mixter, PC B and Jones entered the property, fully aware they were moving towards a violent offender armed with a weapon.
As they advanced, they heard the terrified screams of the child from behind a locked door near the kitchen, pleading with her father not to hurt her.
PC Bradbrook demanded the suspect open the door. When no response came and the child continued screaming, he used sheer physical force, kicking and punching the door until it gave way. PCs Mixter and PC B stood ready with Taser support as the officers gained entry.
Inside, the suspect was on the floor, restraining his daughter between his legs with a knife pressed to her neck.
Officers pleaded with him to release her, but he refused. Recognising the imminent threat to the child’s life, PCs Mixter and PC B discharged their Tasers with precision, taking extreme care to avoid harming the girl.
The Taser incapacitated the suspect long enough for the child to escape into the arms of officers.
When the effects wore off, the suspect regained movement and continued to hold the knife.
With further Taser use proving ineffective, PCs Bradbrook and Jones entered the confined space, disarmed him and restrained him. He was arrested for multiple offences, including attempted murder.
Essex Police Federation Chair Steve Martin said: “As chair of the Essex Police Federation, I could not be more proud of the exceptional courage and professionalism shown by PC Robert Bradbrook, PC B, PC Charlotte Mixter and PC Charlie Jones.
