For police officers at the end of their career, retirement out of the organisation can be a significant source of stress. The loss of a valued role and support network post-retirement can also increase the risk of poor mental health.

The Police Federation of England and Wales believes after a career dedicated to public service, every officer deserves personalised support in building their next chapter.

To ensure the police service improves in this area, it has teamed up with the Police Leavers Partnership, spearheaded by Dr Ceri Jones, a chartered psychologist, and Stuart Noble, a retired chief superintendent from Lancashire Constabulary. Together they have delivered resettlement programmes since 2018 across forces in England including: Lancashire, MPS, GMP, Merseyside and West Midlands.

They have recently launched an online hub called the Police Leavers Employment Gateway.

Whether you're nearing retirement or looking to embark on a new career after years of service, the Police Leavers Employment Gateway is here to support you.

From preparing for job interviews to understanding how your unique skills translate to the civilian job market, the platform caters to every individual, ensuring you can take the next step with confidence.

The platform is designed to support every police leaver, providing comprehensive tools, strategies and resources to ensure a smooth transition into civilian life and into a wide range of industries.

You’ll find step-by-step guides on navigating the job market, from creating the perfect CV to mastering interview tactics. It also provides detailed instructions on where to find job opportunities and how to apply, ensuring you are fully prepared for each step of the process.

Additionally, it offers support in building your professional online presence, including guidance on creating a standout LinkedIn profile and using the platform effectively for networking.

Background

Dr Ceri Jones and Stuart Noble have developed the programme over several years. It is evidence based, applying academic research and over 50 interviews with senior police leaders and those retiring at the end of their career. These interviews informed the development of the programme and supporting materials.

Working closely with the National Police Wellbeing Service (NPWS), Oscar Kilo, they have developed the Police Leavers Toolkit, available to all police leavers, providing guidance and material to assist the transition away from the service.

Working with staff associations and NPWS, the programme has been designed and developed in support of the Police Covenant aim to “ensure that police officers and families are not disadvantaged as a result of their commitment and seeks to mitigate the impact of their service on their day-to-day life”.

Ceri and Stuart have delivered resettlement programmes since 2018 across forces in England including: Lancashire, MPS, GMP, Merseyside and West Midlands. They have received support from both the Police Superintendents’ Association and Chief Police Officers’ Staff Association, delivering the programme to senior leaders across the service.

Continuing to work with NPWS they are keen to expand the offer to all officers and staff as they leave the service, applying the learning, experience and expertise to ensure each programme recognises the unique challenges individual roles and ranks present.
