The August edition of POLICE magazine is out today, a special issue featuring highlights from this year’s Police Bravery Awards as we celebrated the extraordinary acts of courage carried out by more than 100 police officers. Recognising act of gallantry, an update on the ongoing Medals for Heroes campaign is also spotlighted.
In our regular Chair Asks section, Acting National Chair Tiff Lynch spoke to T/Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dr Alison Heydari who was appointed as programme director for the Police Race Action Plan last year, putting forward questions posed by PFEW equality leads on the plan, plus we caught up with PC Babs Rock from the Met on how she came up with the idea of creating a Multi Faith Engagement App for police across the UK.
Campaigning for fair compensation for members injured on duty, PFEW deep dives into several key issues that highlight the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority’s inadequacy in addressing the unique circumstances and challenges faced by police.
POLICE also spotlights the rising tide of violence against police officers through an eye-opening interview with Dave Brewster, national Operation Hampshire coordinator for the National Police Wellbeing Service, who outlines how everyone can play a part in the campaign to ensure assaults are responded to more effectively.
Hear from National Secretary Calum Macleod on the latest pay award over on page 38, and from CEO Mukund Krishna on page 6 on plans to engage more with members and put them at the forefront of the Federation’s work.
Sharing good practice, we interviewed PS Samantha Ryan and DS Viran Wiltshire KPM from the Metropolitan Police Service who launched Helping Employees Affected or Living with Domestic Abuse, a community platform empowering police employees to overcome domestic abuse and break down stigma, plus the College of Policing tells us more about its new “Improving Force Control Room Services” resource, focussing on helping forces deliver excellent service for the public.
POLICE magazine wouldn’t be complete without enlightening stories about impressive feats. Callie-Ann, a special constable with the Metropolitan Police Service, shared with us her inspirational journey ahead of representing Team GB at the Paris Paralympics as a swimmer.
PCs Tim Viner and Rich Edward of West Mercia Police took on the challenge of a lifetime with Shropshire charity, Climbing Out, to improve their wellbeing, undertaking a hiking expedition, summiting several mountains over 4,000m over seven days, whilst a team of PFEW National Board members joined police officers across the UK, running a half marathon in New York to raise funds for the charity J-A-C-K.
We hope you enjoy this edition.
