DC Katy Sigley & PC Mark Sigley

An off-duty husband and wife team, PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley, have been hailed as heroes after rescuing a married couple trapped inside their burning home in Stafford.

On the night of 27 June 2023, Mark and Katy were returning home after attending a family emergency when they encountered what initially appeared to be mist on Baswich Lane. As they approached, they quickly realised it was thick smoke billowing from a nearby house. Without hesitation, Mark stopped the car, while Katy called 999 to alert the Fire Service.

The couple rushed towards the semi-detached home, where smoke was pouring from the garage, which soon erupted into flames. As they banged on the front door, the fire rapidly intensified, significantly increasing the danger.

Mark attempted the front door handle and found it unlocked. Behind it was a second UPVC door, which was locked. Without a moment’s hesitation, Mark forced it open, and both officers entered the smoke-filled hallway, shouting for any occupants.

A female emerged from a room, confused and unaware of the growing inferno. When she opened the kitchen door, thick black smoke surged into the hallway, engulfing everyone inside. Mark quickly directed her out of the house while Katy took hold of her and led her to safety. However, as they exited, the female desperately called out for her husband, who was still upstairs.

Determined to save her husband, Mark ran up the staircase, but the dense smoke overwhelmed him, forcing him back down before he could reach the trapped man. By now, Katy had safely escorted the female outside while Mark urgently sought more information about the male's location.

Realising he was still trapped in a rear bedroom, Mark and Katy acted swiftly. As Mark worked to evacuate the neighbouring homes due to the growing fire and exploding gas canisters, Katy made her way into the adjacent property. From there, she was able to see the male at an upstairs window, calling for help.

Mark rushed to the back of the burning house, staying with the male to provide reassurance while waiting for the Fire Service’s arrival. When firefighters arrived moments later, they swiftly entered the house, equipped with breathing apparatus, and successfully rescued the male from the upper floor before transporting both victims to the hospital.

Both officers demonstrated immense courage, selflessness, and quick thinking, undoubtedly saving lives that night.

Samantha Jackson, Branch Chair of Staffordshire Police Federation, praised their actions:

“Having discussed the incident with the officers and understanding the gravity and seriousness of the situation they found themselves in, I have no doubt that the actions of PC Mark Sigley and DC Kate Sigley saved the lives of both occupants. Their selfless actions in entering a burning building, bravery in the face of very challenging circumstances and their speed of thought in relation to saving the lives of others is outstanding. Both officers are a credit to their respective teams and to the Chief Constable of Staffordshire Police.”

Chris Noble, Chief Constable of Staffordshire Police, commended their heroism:

“I am exceptionally proud of the bravery and actions of both Mark and Kate Sigley. Their duty as police officers and dedication to save life has been demonstrated to the highest standards by their selfless acts whilst off duty. There is no doubt that their actions and unconditional sense of duty to protect, has saved the lives of others on this day”

Had it not been for their decisive actions that night, the outcome could have been far more tragic. Mark and Katy Sigley’s extraordinary courage and dedication to duty make them truly deserving of this prestigious nomination.
