The Police Federation has helped a member secure a substantial settlement following a lengthy legal battle concerning the handling of a professional standards investigation and its impact on their health and wellbeing.
The case highlights the importance of Federation support for members facing some of the most challenging periods of their careers and demonstrates how it works tirelessly to ensure officers have access to expert legal representation when they need it most.
The member, a long-serving police officer, was subjected to an extended professional standards investigation after allegations were made regarding comments allegedly made by others. Throughout the process, the officer maintained they were not involved.
Although the investigation ultimately concluded with no case to answer, the member reported the prolonged process had a significant impact on their mental health and wellbeing. The officer later experienced a period of sickness absence and was subsequently unable to return to policing.
Recognising the seriousness of the circumstances, Federation-funded specialist legal support through its Legal Assistance Scheme. Working closely with the member over several years, solicitors gathered extensive evidence, including expert psychiatric reports, to build a case relating to the way the investigation had been managed and the effect it had on the officer's health.
As the claim progressed, legal representatives argued failures in welfare support and the handling of the investigation contributed to a deterioration in the member's mental health. The case became increasingly complex, involving detailed medical evidence, court proceedings and negotiations between both parties.
Following sustained legal action and extensive preparation, the member was awarded more than £600,000, bringing a long and difficult chapter to a close for the member.
As with all claims, the member kept 100 per cent of the damages awarded.
Acting National Secretary Mel Warnes said: "This case demonstrates why Federation support matters. Policing is an incredibly demanding profession and when officers find themselves facing difficult circumstances, they need to know they are not facing them alone.
"Our member endured a lengthy and challenging experience that had a profound impact on their wellbeing. Throughout that journey, the Federation was there to ensure they had access to expert legal advice, representation and support.
"We are proud to stand alongside our members when they need us most. This outcome is a reminder of the value of Federation membership and the importance of ensuring officers receive the support, fairness and care they deserve."
