National Police Memorial Day keeps the memory of fallen colleagues alive

23 August 2023

Nottinghamshire Police Federation secretary Tom Hill says the National Police Memorial Day ensures fallen officers will never be forgotten.

There’s a little over a month to go until this year’s service at St David’s Hall in Cardiff on Sunday 24 September.

Tom will be representing Nottinghamshire Police Federation and will be joined by the family of two Nottinghamshire officers who have tragically died in the line of duty.

He said: “It’s a really significant event and we all wanted to pay our respects to those officers who have fallen in the line of duty and to show our support for their loved ones.

“The day is a chance for policing to come together and to ensure that those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in serving our communities and couple people safe will never be forgotten.

“We owe it to them to keep their memories alive.”

As in previous years, a tribute wall is planned for people to share their messages of remembrance and support.

The National Police Memorial Day was first held in 2004 and is supported by royalty, government and UK police services.

It is rotated around the four nations of the United Kingdom and is held on the closest Sunday to 29 September, which is St Michael’s Day, the patron saint of policing.

It provides a dignified and sensitive service of remembrance to honour the courage and sacrifice of the almost 4,000 police officers who have been killed on duty.

Click to register to attend the service. The service starts at 2pm and attendees are asked to be seated no later than 1.30pm.
