“This shocking incident is a poignant reminder of the dangers officers face every time they put on their uniform and go to work. They never know what they might encounter, or the risks they may be forced to confront.

“Our thoughts are with our injured colleague, his family and his fellow officers at this difficult time. We wish him a full and speedy recovery and will ensure he receives the support he needs.

“No police officer should face such violence simply for doing their job.”

Two suspects, a man and a woman, fled the scene and remain outstanding. A firearm has been recovered.

The Federation also urged any members who may have been impacted by the incident to contact their local representative.
