Federation remembers PC Ged Walker

9 January 2026

Nottinghamshire Police Federation is remembering PC Gerald (Ged) Walker on the 23rd anniversary of his death.

Ged, a police dog handler for Nottinghamshire Police was killed in the line of duty.

He was fatally injured after he and his dog chased a suspect after a stolen taxi was abandoned in Bulwell.

He was dragged along the road while trying to arrest the suspect, who was driving away in a second car.

Ged died from his injuries two days later.

In September 2005, a memorial stone for him was unveiled at the junction of St Alban's Road and Cantrell Road in Bulwell, close to where the incident happened.

After leaving school at 16, Ged joined the Police Cadets and became an officer in 1978.

He was part of the Force dog section stationed at headquarters from 1987 until his death on 9 January 2003.

In 1990 he had received a judge’s commendation for saving the life of someone attempting to die by suicide.

Tom Hill, Nottinghamshire Police Federation secretary, said: “Ged demonstrated incredible bravery to put his life on the line to try to stop an offender and prevent a crime being committed.

“It underlines the risks that police officers face every day in supporting the people and communities of Nottinghamshire.

“Today we remember Ged, and our thoughts are also with his family, friends, and colleagues.

“Those who give their lives in the line of duty must never be forgotten. We will remember them.”
