Branch secretary prepares for third emotional Police Unity Tour

Nottinghamshire Police secretary Tom Hill is preparing to take part in his third Police Unity Tour.

Setting off today (Friday 7 August) from Lincolnshire HQ, Tom will once again join colleagues from across the East Midlands.

The team will include colleagues from Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire forces, as they begin their journey to remember fallen officers and support their families.

And for Tom, the ride is about far more than the distance covered.

“It’s my third year taking part. It’s a great cause and a great ride,” said Tom, adding: “It’s an emotional ride, especially when you meet the families and hear their stories.”

Tom has ridden each of his three Police Unity Tours in memory of Maurice Farmer, continuing to honour his legacy and ensure his sacrifice is never forgotten.

On Saturday, police riders from chapters across the UK will come together at the Snowdome in Tamworth before cycling as one group to Drayton Manor, where they will meet bereaved families of fallen officers taking part in the Care of Police Survivors (COPS) Survivor Weekend.

Tom continued: Meeting the families is one of the most significant and emotional parts of the weekend, giving riders the opportunity to show their continued support and pay tribute to officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

The East Midlands Chapter will also include Elaine Atkinson, sister of fallen Nottinghamshire Police Officer Chris McDonald, and Tracey Walker, widow of Pc Ged Walker.

The ride concludes on Sunday morning with a moving service of remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum, bringing together riders, families, and members of the wider policing community to reflect and remember.
