Remembering Graham

29 August 2025

Nottinghamshire Police Federation today remembers Sergeant Graham Saville.

At just before 7pm on 24 August 2023, officers responded to reports of a male in distress on the railway lines at Balderton, near Newark Northgate Station.

Graham, 46, entered the rail network to help save the man but, while doing so, was struck by a passing train.

Both men were taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham but on 29 August, Graham sadly died from his injuries.

Graham had originally joined the Metropolitan Police, transferring to Nottinghamshire Police in February 2017.

Tom Hill, secretary of Nottinghamshire Police Federation, said: “The events of two years ago are firmly etched in the memories of everyone who worked for the Force at the time, but Graham’s death was felt beyond the Force and the world of policing.

“His tragic death was a clear reminder of how police officers put their lives at risk to try to help others, often complete strangers.

“Today we remember Graham and keep his family, friends and colleagues in our thoughts as they continue to feel his loss and come to terms with his death.”

After his death, the then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak commented: “It is a testament to his bravery that he died in the line of duty and a terrible reminder of the work the police do every day to keep us safe.”
