Remembering Force dog handler

9 January 2025

Nottinghamshire PC Gerald (Ged) Walker died on this day 22 years ago.

Ged, 42, and his dog chased a suspect after a stolen taxi was abandoned in Bulwell. He was dragged along the road while trying to arrest the suspect who was driving away in a second car and died from his injuries two days later.

Ged had joined the Police Cadets when he left school at 16 and became an officer in 1978. He was part of the Force dog section stationed at headquarters from 1987 until his death on 9 January 2003. In 1990 he had received a judge’s commendation for saving the life of a potential suicide.

Simon Riley, chair of Nottinghamshire Police Federation, said: “Ged will always be remembered for his service to the Force and the communities of Nottinghamshire. He died while fighting crime and trying to keep the public safe, and it is important that we continue to recognise the fact that he gave his life while carrying out his duties. Our thoughts today remain with the family, friends and colleagues who continue to feel his loss.”
