Award-winning Sirens netball is a sports team for all

12 May 2025

The award-winning Nottinghamshire Police netball club has teams for all abilities, says one of its captains, Detective Sergeant Georgina ‘Georgie’ Gallagher.

Georgie is encouraging players to 'give it a try' and get involved in the Sirens after it was named Force’s Sports and Social Club Team of the Year.
The club plays in Police Sport UK (PSUK), regional, and local competitions and tournaments. And it has players in their teens up to their 50s.
Georgie said: “With all the different competitions and leagues we play in, we genuinely do have something for all abilities.
“We’re always looking for new members to get involved.

“Anyone who fancies trying it is more than welcome.”

Sirens started 15 years ago and now has more than 60 playing members. The club has four teams playing in four leagues, competitive and charity tournaments and the PSUK competitions.

It took two teams to the PSUK knockout tournament, with the Black team finishing third.

Georgie said: “We’re one of the biggest clubs in the Force in terms of membership.

“We try to cater for everyone so that everyone has a team or league to play in.”

Goal defence

Georgie, who plays in the defensive positions of goal keeper or goal defence, has played for the Sirens for seven years.

She joined the club before she became an officer and credits it as being one of the reasons she joined the Force.

“I had finished university and was back living in Nottingham,” said Georgie, who is now a detective sergeant on the Force’s modern slavery team.

“My sister played netball with someone who had parents in the police.

“I had always wanted to be a police officer, but it was around the time there was a hiring freeze.

“Through Nottinghamshire netball connections, they invited me along to training.

“I played with them for a few months and then they opened up recruitment again and I went for it.

“Joining the netball team gave me the chance to speak to lots of people who were officers and they lured me in.

“There’s been a couple of people we’ve had come along since who have done similar, playing for the Sirens and then ending up joining the police.”

Georgie said that the club was not just about what happens on the court, but also has a strong social side as well.

Netball

“We train every week,” she said. “We have a nice combination of skills, game-based training and fun stuff, so again it’s something for everyone. And we have lots of socials as well.

“For instance, we organise trips to watch international netball.

“But we also have lots of non-netball socials which are suitable for all ages.

“I absolutely love it. It’s a great club and great to be involved with.”

It is the third time that Sirens has been named Team of the Year.

Chief Inspector Amy Styles-Jones, who is chair of the Sirens, described the award as ‘another proud moment for the netball section’.

She said: “We're a club that works hard on and off the court and that doesn't happen without a significant amount of time and effort from the members of our committee, so I'd like to dedicate this award to them.”
