Nottinghamshire Police Federation

Cops support local charity on Christmas Day

12 January 2024

Two Nottinghamshire Police Federation members literally served their community when they helped support a church group Christmas Day dinner.

PC Ryan Frew-McGill and PC Scott Lane joined volunteers at the All Saints Centre in Huthwaite near Sutton-in-Ashfield on Christmas Day to serve a three-course dinner to 72 guests.

Ryan and Scott took on a number of roles during the day, including meeting and greeting, and serving drinks to guests on arrival, as well as serving the meal, clearing away, and prepping dessert.

Scott said: “The dinner was aimed at people who were either going to be alone at Christmas, or unable to afford to feed themselves and their families, or members of the church who wanted to go for their dinner.

“It was a nice day and a really good way for us to get involved in the community.

“They appreciated us being there and for our help.”

Ryan said they hoped the event will help them build closer ties with the community.

“Scott had spoken to the church warden before the event and was told there were concerns surrounding hate crime, and that people didn’t feel comfortable disclosing these crimes to the police,” he said.

“We saw it as a good opportunity to engage with hard-to-reach communities in an environment which was open to everyone and offered a sense of belonging, while also doing our bit to, quite literally, serve the community.

“We wanted, where possible, to build community confidence in the police for a better police and public relationship.

“It showed that policing is more than just about dealing with crimes, but instead helping the community and representing them.

“We hope to be more involved in similar events and become recognised by our communities as approachable to prevent crimes going unreported.”
