Brave dog handler attends exclusive Downing Street reception

11 July 2024

A dog handler who has been nominated for a national Police Bravery Award says ‘words don’t do it justice’ as he tells how ‘amazing’ it was being invited into Downing Street.

PC Chris Duffy was among dozens of officers who attended an exclusive reception hosted by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and new policing minister Dame Diana Johnson DBE, it was the first official event to be hosted by the members of the new Government since the General Election (which took place on Thursday 4 July).

The Nottinghamshire Police Federation member has since described the event as ‘amazing’, adding that it gave him a ‘small glimpse’ into life inside Number 10.

“You could feel so much pride in the room,” he said, adding: “We were outside in the garden, the sun was shining, it just felt amazing. Words don’t do it justice.

“I’m so grateful to the Police Federation for giving us such a fantastic opportunity.”

Chris received his nomination after being attacked and left with his skull exposed.

Nomination

The incident happened last March, when Chris and his police dog Reno were called to Mansfield after reports that seven people were threatening to smash the windows and assault the landlord.

He had been trying to arrest his attacker’s brother, when he was struck with a weapon and then subjected to a sustained assault once on the ground.

He fought back and the attacker, Mason Perkins, ran from the scene. Chris managed to get back to his feet and locate Perkins, who was arrested by officers.

Chris and his fiancee, along with branch chair Simon Riley will be attending tonight’s national Police Bravery Awards, which is organised by the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) and takes place in London.
