Gloucestershire Police Federation

Christmas and New Year Message from Gloucestershire Police Federation Chair Adam Williams

23 December 2025

As I look back on 2025, it is clear this has been one of the most challenging years for policing in Gloucestershire.

The Constabulary has faced the difficult task of finding £12 million in savings, and these cuts have inevitably impacted every part of our organisation.

Officers and staff have been working under immense pressure, managing significant workloads while striving to improve performance in an environment of reduced resources.

Policing has always demanded resilience, but the strain this year has been exceptional.

Conversations with colleagues across the county have highlighted the toll this is taking on officers’ health and wellbeing.

This is reflected in the number of days lost due to sickness (12,552), which is a stark reminder of the human cost behind the headlines.

Funding remains a critical issue for policing nationally, and until this is addressed, forces will continue to face the impossible challenge of balancing budgets while maintaining service to the public.

As we approach the festive season, many professions are winding down for a well-deserved break. For our officers, the reality is very different.

Many will be working throughout Christmas and New Year, juggling the demands of duty with the desire to spend precious time with loved ones.

This commitment does not go unnoticed, and I want to express my deepest gratitude to every officer and member of staff for their dedication and professionalism during these difficult times.

I will be getting involved too and will join my old response team for late shifts on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

At this time of year, we also take time to remember our fallen colleague PC Ian Minett, who died in June. And think of his family and friends.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Gloucestershire Police Federation remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting you. Welfare will be at the heart of everything we do.

We will continue to fight for fair funding, challenge decisions that compromise officer wellbeing, and ensure your voice is heard at every level.

Together, we will navigate these challenges and work towards a future where the health, safety, and morale of our workforce are prioritised.

Thank you for everything you have done this year. Please take every opportunity to rest, recharge, and spend time with those who matter most.

On behalf of the Federation, I wish you and your families a safe and peaceful Christmas and a brighter, stronger New Year.
