Mark Andrews, Chairman of Wiltshire Police Federation, looks ahead to the so-called "Super Saturday" and the policing challenges it brings.
Mark said: “I know people are excited about the pubs opening this weekend but I would ask them to be sensible and stick to the protective measures introduced by the Government to ensure people’s safety.
“It has been a long four months for everyone and it is understandable that people want to let their hair down and enjoy the company of friends and family. I do however worry a minority of those who wish to take this opportunity will go too far and cause an issue for others trying to enjoy what the night time economy has to offer.
“Wiltshire Police has ensured, through the cancellation of some officer’s rest days, that we have sufficient resources to allow people to relax without fear of disorder. These changes to police officers' shifts have a significant impact on their wellbeing and I hope our communities appreciate the work they do and the sacrifices they make to keep them safe.
“We have seen recent rises in assaults against police officers who are trying to encourage people to follow the Covid rules. This is totally unacceptable. Hopefully common sense and civility will prevail this weekend but, where it doesn’t, we are prepared to deal effectively and proportionally with those breaking the law or assaulting our officers.”
