Mark Skinner is a Personal Insolvency solicitor with many years experience advising members of various Police federations with regard to their debt/ insolvency difficulties; having advised GMP and Lancashire federation for approximately ten years.

More recently, he has entered into a partnership with Legal Insurance Management (LIM) with regard to offering debt advice as part of the Group Insurance Scheme.  Basically, if any federation member requires bankruptcy then the insurer’s policy will cover the bankruptcy fee (£680) as well as Mark's fee in helping with the bankruptcy forms (£450).

However, as part of the process of getting to the stage where the advice is that bankruptcy is best for you there has to be a free advice session to assess the members financial circumstances. This advice is always offered free of charge to any member coming forward.  Most members do not need bankruptcy but there will always be another solution to their debt/ insolvency problem.  This could be an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) or possibly a Debt Management Plan (DMP). He also advises on other matters such as mortgage arrears, money management, credit rating etc.

Mark is passionate about assisting federation members who encounter debt and insolvency problems.  As you may be aware it is a significant welfare issue and debt often leads to depression, which in turn can lead to time off work and ultimately other consequential outcomes such as relationship breakdown and even suicide.  It is consequently imperative that any organisation that has a duty of care to its members offers good debt and insolvency advice.  Our Members have the added benefit of the extra insurance that LIM provide and associated with that is the ‘first stage’ debt advice that Mark can offer to any member who comes forward.  Debt often carries with it a great deal of stigma and baggage and it is often difficult for the debtor to make the first phone call.  Mark can makes this as easy as possible by offering free and impartial telephone debt advice in the first instance.  He is also available for face to face meetings and correspondence over email.
