Christmas and New Year Message from Kent Police Federation Chair Neil Mennie

23 December 2025

As we head towards the end of the year and the festive celebrations, demand also sadly increases on those colleagues working through it.

It’s certainly not a cheery time for many and they will reach for the police. New Year's Eve of course will inevitably involve those who end up ‘heavily under the influence’ and adding to the custody suite.

However always nice to chat with the majority of the public who are in good spirits and supportive of those working during the holiday period.

Protest continues to be a demand on our officers be it locally or via mutual aid. One of the phrases increasing in popularity is ‘two tier policing’ which in simplistic terms appears to be where differing sides have a view on how the other side should be policed.

Policing without fear or favour is fundamental and those Kent Officers who are deployed either in or out of county are nothing but professional and capable.

It’s that time of year when we ask the Chief about the South East Allowance. The fact that this is now an annual event is not helpful and causes concern. The situation of the force not being able to plan ahead more than one year at a time, while it awaits funding decisions from government is ridiculous.

This impacts funding and investment in so many areas and its certain more savings will have to be found. New recruits are great to have, and they are very welcome, but this appears to be giving with one hand and taking away with the other. It’s also time not just to talk about the police funding formula but actually do something about it!

We have had another very busy year dealing with misconduct allegations both locally and by the IOPC. It’s a reminder of the importance of joining our off duty legal scheme as not all allegations are as a result of being on duty and in the execution of duty.

Again, recently we have had to explain to some members that they are not covered which is always distressing. Money is tight but at £7 a month please consider joining.

This is a message we often repeat and make no apology for doing so because it’s so important. All of the details can be found on our Kent Police Federation website

If you have a moment have a look at the topics discussed recently at our annual conference on the national PFEW website which also contains a lot of other useful information. It also includes details of our copped enough campaign on officer pay and conditions.

Thank you to our busy representatives across the county and those new reps who have stepped up and currently undergoing training. Do have a chat with them as it really helps inform us what is going on locally and where we can help.

I know many families will be moving timings around opening presents and Christmas dinner to include those officers who will be keeping us all safe on shift.

Stay safe and look after each other.

May we wish you all a merry Christmas and happy new year.
