Humberside Police Federation has written to all MPs in the force area to highlight the racist abuse suffered by officers on duty.
Chair Lee Sims is asking all local MPs in Humberside to support the Protect The Protectors: Stop Racism Against Police campaign.
He has asked them to use their voices in Parliament to lobby for a change in legislation to mandate custodial sentences for those found guilty of racially abusing officers.
In the letter, Lee said: “Sadly, we have noticed an increase in racist abuse towards our officers: Humberside Police Federation carried out a survey that revealed more than 50% of officers and staff from an ethnic minority background have suffered such abuse while carrying out their duty.
“Many of these officers have suffered in silence for a number of years, and there are several factors that have led to officers no longer reporting widespread abuse.
“I am sure you will agree this is unacceptable; our officers do not come to work to be abused whilst protecting our communities.”
