Humberside Police Federation is now offering members the chance to sign up to the National Police Healthcare Scheme which is run in conjunction with a number of Federation branches within the region to offer affordable healthcare to not only police officers but also to police staff.

Serving police officers subscribing to the scheme receive free membership of the Police Treatment Centres (PTC).

Retired officers can remain within the scheme but have to have joined during their police service, however they do not receive free membership to the PTC.

The National Police Healthcare Scheme - established in 1989 - is a self-financing scheme set up under a Trust Deed to provide private medical advice and treatment to subscribing members and their dependants.

Its main aim is to make the advantages of private medical care available to members at a reasonable cost.

The scheme also includes an alternative cash benefit for NHS treatment (currently £100 a night or £100 for day case surgery). All benefits are payable at the trustees' discretion. Please note that the cash benefit does not apply to members admitted to an NHS hospital as an emergency admission.

• Any member wishing to make a claim under the scheme must initially obtain a claim form from the Northumbria Federation Office - telephone 0191 4373763 - before seeing their GP.

• Any procedures proposed by the consultant following the diagnostic tests must be referred to The Northern Police Healthcare Scheme for prior approval.
• Please note that a £50 excess payment is required for any new claim and must be submitted when returning the GP referral form.

What is no-fault divorce?

No-fault divorce means that separating spouses no longer need to assign blame in order to be granted a divorce.

Under the previous divorce law, a petitioner had to rely on one of five facts (two of which were fault-based) to prove the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage:

The no-fault divorce legislation has changed this, abolishing the five facts and simply replacing them with a statement of irretrievable breakdown. No evidence is needed to support this.
