Humberside Police Federation’s ‘Feed your kid for a quid’ scheme is helping officers who are struggling with rising costs over the summer holidays.
Federation Chair Lee Sims said: “In Humberside we’ve recognised that officers and staff are going to struggle over the summer holidays with children being at home. It’s going to be expensive, especially with rising food costs. We wanted to help where we could.”
Officers can pick up essentials such as milk, pasta, fruit, cereals, eggs and tinned goods from the Federation office, booking a slot by emailing admin@humber.polfed.org. Their £1 donation goes towards The Police Children’s Charity.
Lee said: “It’s been really successful so far – on our first morning we had about 15 officers come along and they all said what a help it’s been.
“We’ve realised people are dealing with the rising cost of fuel and also with childcare, so for the next couple of weeks we’re going to be going to all police stations across the force and hold open days so people can see us outside the station and come and get some food.”
Lee stressed that the pay rise police officers will receive in September is still well below inflation, so he expected people to continue to struggle. He said: “More officers are coming to us every week with financial worries and we are able to signpost them to the Welfare Fund and Benevolent Fund.
“You don’t need to suffer in silence – the Federation and our partner agencies are always here to help.”
Lee thanked Number1 Copperpot Credit Union for sponsoring the ‘Feed your kid for a quid’ scheme.
