Humberside Police Federation chair Pete Musgrave says an attack on two police officers in Hackney, London witnessed by people who stood by and laughed has left him feeling sickened and disgusted.
The Metropolitan Police officers were filmed being kicked and shoved after allegedly being flagged down by people who claimed to have been assaulted.
“I was absolutely sickened to see the footage of this incident,” says Pete, “It is bad enough that they were ambushed in this way but to think that people were watching the attack, laughing and taking selfies is just disgusting.
“These officers were going about their duties and, just like all police colleagues, would not have hesitated to go to the assistance of someone they thought was in need of their help. It is beyond belief that they were then subjected to an assault that left one officer grappling on the floor as he tried to restrain the man attacking him.
“Police officers are committed to serving their communities, seeking to fight crime, keep order and protect the vulnerable in our societies. They put their lives on the line as they run towards danger as others run away. They should not be subjected to violence in the course of carrying out their duties.
“An attack on a police officer is an attack on society itself and I hope those involved in this shocking incident feel the full weight of the law.”
Two men were arrested on suspicion of assault on police.
