Register to attend memorial day service

15 September 2025

There is still time to register to attend this year’s National Police Memorial Day service.

The service is being held at Coventry Cathedral for the first time and is at 2pm on Sunday 28 September.

“Officers simply have to complete an online registration if they want to attend the service,” says Luke Mitchell, chair of Hertfordshire Police Federation, who will represent the branch at the service.

“The memorial day service honours our fallen colleagues, shows our ongoing support for their families and also serves to highlight the unique role police officers have in our communities, given the dangers they face on a daily basis.”

While the service is attended by police officers of all ranks, politicians and key policing stakeholders, the congregation includes the families of officers who lost their lives on duty.

Service

A roll of honour will be read out listing the names of officers who have died in the 12 months since the 2024 memorial day service in Glasgow.

The relatives of four fallen officers will light candles to commemorate police lives lost in each of the four nations of the UK during the service.

National Police Memorial Day was established by former Kent officer Joe Holness in the wake of the brutal death of his colleague PC Jon Odell in Margate in December 2000.

The first service was held in London in 2004 and since then it has rotated around the four nations of the UK, generally being held in London when hosted in England, though it was held at Lincoln Cathedral in 2021.
