Hertfordshire Police Federation

Fed rep thanks our ‘amazing’ Specials

13 June 2025

Hertfordshire Police Federation has thanked the Force’s Special Constabulary for the support it gives to frontline policing.

James Stopford, the branch’s Specials lead and full-time rep, said it was important to recognise the contribution volunteer officers make.

Marking National Volunteers’ Week, James said: “On behalf of the Federation, I wanted to say a huge thank-you to our Specials.

“It’s important that we recognise the fantastic work they do, volunteering their own time to support their regular colleagues, to build relationships in the community, and to keep people safe.

“Regular officers understand and appreciate just how difficult frontline policing is, so for our Specials to give up their precious time to serve the community is amazing.”

James also used National Volunteers’ Week to urge police forces to ensure they are giving Specials the support they need.

Specials

He said: “It’s critical that constabularies recognise their contribution. Specials have the same police powers and wear the same uniform as regular officers, and they need support and development opportunities to perform their duties to the very best of their ability.

“June is a time when we’re encouraged to think of our physical and psychological health for Men’s Health Month, and that is as true for our Specials as our regular officers.

“Specials attend the same incidents and will be exposed to traumatic events which could impact them down the line.

Support

“It’s vital that they have access to follow-up support, should they need it.”

The most recent Home Office figures showed that Hertfordshire had 139 Specials as of 30 September. Each Special is asked to volunteer 16 hours a month.

James said: “Our Specials play a hugely important role and are contributing thousands of hours every month.

“As a Federation, we thank them for all of their efforts in supporting our other members and making our county a safer place in which to live and work.”
