Hertfordshire Police Federation chair Luke Mitchell is urging members to consider attending the National Police Memorial Day service, being held this year in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.
The service will be held on Sunday 29 September, starting at 2pm.
“The National Police Memorial Day service rotates round each of the four countries in the United Kingdom and is held on the closest Sunday to 29 September which is St Michael’s Day. St Michael is the patron saint of policing,” says Luke.
“The memorial day was founded by Inspector Joe Holness QPM OBE following the brutal killing of his fellow Kent Police officer Jon Odell in Margate in December 2000 with the first service being held in St Paul’s Cathedral in London on Sunday 3 October 2004.
“While Joe has now retired, the annual memorial day service continues and has become a key event in the policing year. It is a very moving service and I would urge all officers to consider attending at least once during their careers as it is a poignant reminder of the unique role of police officers in society while also offering an opportunity to pay our respects to fallen colleagues and their families.”
