Hertfordshire Police Federation today remembers PC Frank Mason who was shot dead when he tried to stop an armed robbery.
Frank, 27, was off duty and walking his dog when he intervened in the armed robbery of a security van in Hemel Hempstead on 14 April 1988.
He had arrested one suspect when he was shot in the chest by a second attacker and died of his injuries. Frank was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.
Hertfordshire Police Federation chair Luke Mitchell said: “This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks our members take in serving their communities even when off-duty.
“Frank acted in the very best traditions of policing, showing bravery and a determination to fight crime and keep the public safe. Sadly, he paid the ultimate price and we must never forget his sacrifice. Nor should we forget his family, his friends and his former colleagues and they all remain in our thoughts today.”
The Frank Mason Memorial Award was established to commemorate his life. The award is presented to a Dacorum-based officer displaying similar dedication to the service as Frank.
