A police officer who was shot as he attempted to prevent an armed robbery has been remembered on the 34th anniversary of his death.
Hertfordshire Police Federation chair Geoff Bardell led the tributes to PC Frank Mason who died on 14 April 1988, aged 27.
Frank was walking his dog while off duty when he intervened in an armed robbery on a security van in Hemel Hempstead.
He had arrested one suspect when he was shot in the chest by a second attacker and died of his injuries. He was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.
Geoff said: “On that terrible day, Frank acted in the very best traditions of policing, showing amazing bravery in tackling the gunmen.
“He displayed selflessness and dedication to the public in doing everything he could to keep them safe.
“He made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life protecting us, and he’s an officer we’re all proud to say was one of our own.
“The thoughts of everyone at Hertfordshire Police Federation are with Frank’s family, friends and former colleagues on this day.”
The Frank Mason Memorial Award has been established to commemorate his life. The award is presented to a Dacorum-based officer displaying similar dedication to the service as Frank.
