A fund-raising appeal has been launched to help the family of a Sussex Police officer who has been left paralysed from the chest down after suffering a blood clot days after being kicked in the back while on duty.
PC Darren Triggs (36) has a four-year-old daughter with Down’s Syndrome, a younger daughter and his wife is 30 weeks pregnant with their third child.
Matt Webb, chair of Sussex Police Federation, explains: “Last week, in Sussex, one of our officers was kicked in the back by a detainee while he was driving them to custody. Five days later he woke in the night to severe chest pains and was rushed to hospital where it was diagnosed that he had a blood clot on his spine. The doctors are unable to state one way or the other whether the assault and the clot are connected.”
The clot was removed during surgery but it is feared he will never walk again and may not even be able to sit up unaided.
The Federation has set up a Just Giving page for donations to help and support the family and is hoping to raise £30,000.
