The Home Secretary has revealed plans to establish a police covenant to recognise the sacrifice made by police officers.
Sajid Javid, speaking at last Thursday’s Police Bravery Awards, said the covenant would recognise that police officers are not employees but hold the ‘office of constable’ which comes with a high level of personal accountability and responsibility for the protection of life and property.
The covenant would enshrine the welfare of police officers in law and recognise their role in society.
“I’m pleased to announce that the Government plans to introduce a police covenant to provide the support the police so richly deserve,” he said, “This will be a pledge to do more as a nation to help those who serve this country. It will ensure the sacrifice made by the police is properly recognised.
“I’m in awe of every officer who plays their part in keeping this country safe. Rest assured, the Government has your back – and the police covenant will make sure of that.”
The announcement came just a week after the launch of the report from the Front-line Review which included six recommendations aimed at improving wellbeing within the police service.
Geoff Bardell, chair of Hertfordshire Police Federation, has welcomed plans for the police covenant and said it was time officers received the recognition and support they deserved.
“Police officers carry out a unique role in our communities, running towards danger as others run away. They deal with traumatic incidents on a daily basis and clearly that can have an impact on their wellbeing,” he explained.
“It is pleasing to see that the need for better support is being recognised by the Government and we now need to see action as well as words.
“Here in Hertfordshire, we know psychological illness among officers has increased so much so that last year it made up more than 50 per cent of all sickness absence. While our members are committed to looking after their communities, we also need to see the Government, forces and police leaders making a similar commitment to prioritising officers’ wellbeing too.”
During his speech at the bravery awards, the Home Secretary also announced plans for the Police Federation to extend its support to Special Constables giving the volunteers access to the same protections as their colleagues.
There will be a consultation period on the plans for the covenant.
