Hampshire Police Federation Reacts To Tom Winsor's Statement on Wanting to Trawl Police Officer's Private Mobile Phones
8 November 2021
Garry Smith, Secretary of Hampshire Police Federation, said: "Police officers are already bound by Police Regulations which have a significant impact on their private lives. Any such intrusion as suggested by Tom Winsor would be a breach of police officers’ human rights, namely their right to a private life.
“Policing is already stretched and struggling to meet demand. I would be interested to know how this course of action would be policed.”
He added: “Misogyny does not just exist in policing. It is in every aspect of society. Any measures taken to identify those with misogynistic views should consider all those in a position of authority, not just police officers.”
The Police Federation of England and Wales said: "Police officers are subject to the law, like anyone else. Random checks of their personal phones for nothing more than a fishing exercise would be excessive, disproportionate and unlawful.
“Police officers deserve to have a private life."
