National Federation conference begins today

9 June 2021

Politicians will join police chiefs and leading Federation figures for the first-ever virtual national Federation annual conference, which starts today.

Policing Under Pressure is the theme of the two-day conference, which will be facilitated by TV and radio presenter Ian Collins.

Derbyshire Police Federation chair Tony Wetton said: “It’s been a year like no other for everyone and policing has faced unique challenges. Our conference will give us the chance to discuss the impact of the last 15 months and to share our experiences with each other.

“I hope that with the conference being held virtually, it will allow for more members to listen to the session than may have been the case with a physical event.”

Day 1 highlights include key note speeches by national Federation chair John Apter and a senior cabinet minister, who will both take part in a Q and A session.

There will also be a discussion on Policing Under Pressure with policing minister Kit Malthouse; shadow policing minister Sarah Jones; Martin Hewitt, the chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, and Sir Thomas Winsor, HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary.

TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith will speak to some of the nominees for the Police Bravery Awards, there’s an update on pay, conditions and pensions facilitated by former political spin doctor and recent Good Morning Britain host Alastair Campbell, and Met Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick will present the Women in Policing Award.

Day 2 highlights include discussions on trial by media, policing protests and wellbeing as well as understanding misogyny in policing, investing in the investigators and recruitment during the pandemic.
