Remember online Memorial Day service

Derbyshire Police Federation secretary Kirsty Bunn is reminding members about the online National Police Memorial Day (NPMD) service this weekend.

This year’s service, which honours officers who have died in the line of duty, will be held online on Sunday (27 September) at 3pm due to the current Covid-19 restrictions.

The website streaming the service is also hosting a tribute wall for memories and messages about lost loved ones.

Kirsty said: “I hope as many people as possible are able to watch the online service and add their own messages to the tribute wall. The memorial day service is a key date in the policing calendar. It gives us the opportunity to come together and pay tribute to those officers who have paid the ultimate price while serving the public.

“It also shows our support for their families, friends and colleagues that their memory will live on and the sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Those wishing to access the service will be asked to provide their name and email address.

National Police Memorial Day was first held in 2004 and has been held at the end of September each year since. It rotates around England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Federation representatives, chief officers and the Home Secretary usually join the families of fallen officers at the service and the Prince of Wales, patron of the National Police Memorial Day charity, often attends.
