PC prepares to go on the run in New York City

9 July 2019

Clay Cross PC David Motais is about to embark on a 16-week training programme to prepare him to run the New York Marathon in November this year.

David, who has been with the Force for 17 years, is one of a team of 60 people nationwide taking part in the marathon to raise money for the Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund. Nicola and her Greater Manchester Police colleague Fiona Bone were murdered in September 2012 and the fund was set up by her father, Bryn.

Having taken up running when he was 14, the 26.2 miles around New York will be David’s fourth marathon since he has already taken part in the Leicester, Nottingham and London events.

“I am looking forward to the experience of running in a different country and particularly the fact that it is in New York which I have never visited before,” he explained.

“I think the biggest challenge will be to raise as much in sponsorship money as I can for the charity. I have set a target of £800 but it would be great to beat that.”

David will start training on 16 July so that he is fully prepared for when he flies to New York on 1 November where he will meet the other people running as part of the Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund team. The fund’s runners include police officers and staff, prison officers, a nurse, journalists and Bryn himself.

The charity provides funding for education and employment training for young people under the age of 21 who have lost a close family member as a result of murder or manslaughter.
