Glasgow hosting National Police Memorial Day

24 September 2019

Derbyshire Police Federation chair Tony Wetton will be attending Sunday’s National Police Memorial Day service in Glasgow.

The Federation has also invited Angela Morgan, the fiancée of Derbyshire DC Gary Freeman who died along with DC Anthony Thornley when their vehicle was in collision with a lorry on 19 August 1994, as its guest at the service.

“National Police Memorial Day is a very important date in the policing calendar giving us all an opportunity to remember our fallen colleagues and to show our support to their families,” says Tony.

“In the summer, Angela gave a very moving speech at the Care of Police Survivors’ service of remembrance and we thought it would be fitting to ask her to join us at the memorial day in Glasgow."

Sunday’s service will be held in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.

The annual memorial day service, which is held on the last Sunday in September each year, rotates around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and honours police officers who have been killed or died in the line of duty.

National Police Memorial Day was founded by Joe Holness following the brutal killing of his Kent Police colleague Jon Odell in Margate in December 2000.

The first service was held at St Paul’s Cathedral in 2004 and in 2006 His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales became the patron of National Police Memorial Day.
