Private healthcare created for the police family

6 February 2025

Derbyshire Police Federation has teamed up with the National Police Healthcare Scheme to offer members and their families affordable private healthcare.

The National Police Healthcare Scheme was created in 1989 by police officers to offer swift access to the best medical treatment available at not-for-profit rates.

It is overseen by eight trustees, who are all serving police officers, receive no personal benefit, and ensure the scheme is run on a not-for-profit basis.

The scheme has more than 10,000 members across 30 forces, and has formal agreements with 22 police federation branches and police forces.

Police officers of all ranks, police staff, and their partners and children aged under 21 can join the scheme.

Derbyshire Police Federation members who sign up get the first three months free. This is available for all membership categories, including ‘Full Family’ membership.

The scheme is also free for student officers from the date of joining the Force.

All members have exclusive access to the scheme’s luxury holiday homes.

No medical declarations or assessments are required to join, and deductions are made from salary.

The scheme covers the cost of:

  • Consultant fees

  • Diagnostic procedures and tests

  • Surgical procedures and treatments

  • Physiotherapy, osteopathy, and chiropractic treatment

  • All relevant treatments and follow-ups

  • Alternative cash benefit for NHS Treatment

  • Pre-existing conditions are covered after two years

  • Membership of Police Treatment Centres

Derbyshire Police Federation chair Keith Chambers said: “We’re pleased to be teaming up with the National Police Healthcare Scheme and to offer our members and their families the benefits of the scheme.

“As police officers, we face unique challenges and situations each day, and you never know what is around the corner or when you might need access to healthcare or a diagnosis.

“The pressures the NHS faces means there can often be long waits for assessments or treatment.

“We’d encourage members to look at the scheme and its benefits.”

Please note that scheme rules apply.

Members can apply online, or visit the National Police Healthcare Scheme’s website to find out more.
