Time’s running out for members who want to stand as candidates for workplace representative positions on the Derbyshire Police Federation Branch Council.
Members can self-nominate up until Friday (24 January) and the Force’s constables, sergeants and inspecting ranks, as well as Specials, can all put themselves forward as workplace representatives.
The Federation is making a special plea to members from under-represented groups to consider putting themselves forward to become reps to help better reflect the diversity of the membership.
Keith Chambers, branch chair, has already urged members to take a full part in the elections, which are being held within all Federation branches across England and Wales.
He wants anyone who thinks they could be an effective workplace rep in terms of representing and supporting colleagues to put themselves forward in the election but also wants all members to vote, firstly for the local candidates of their choice but then later for the branch chair and, eventually, the national chair.
Keith explained: “I really hope that members will take an interest in these elections, whether that be by standing as a candidate or by finding out about those putting themselves forward and casting their votes for the people they think will do the best job for the membership.
“We often hear officers criticising the Federation but if you are unhappy why not try to drive change from the inside of the organisation?
“As a Federation rep, you play a critical role in representing members’ views, ensuring their voices are heard and supporting them through any challenging times they face.
“It can be challenging at times, but it is also one of the most rewarding roles you can undertake in the Force since you are helping your colleagues.”
Electronic voting for workplace reps will take place from 3 to 23 February, with the results announced on 27 February.
Information on the first round of elections for workplace reps, including how to self-nominate and how to vote, has been emailed to all members.
More details about the elections process, which began on 30 December and will end on 1 October when the new National Board will be in place, can be found on Page 5 of the winter edition of our members’ magazine News & Views
