‘Stay safe’ during the ongoing hot spell’

26 June 2024

Derbyshire Police Federation’s health and safety lead Steve Reid says it’s vital members take steps to stay safe in the ongoing hot spell.

Steve said: “We’re in the warmest weather we’ve had this year, potentially rising up to 30C.

“My message to members is to keep hydrated.

“If they’re on the streets or on a scene then take lots of water with you, wear a cap, and put on sunscreen.

Cool down

“When you are back at the station or doing other things and it’s safe to do so, then look at taking your body armour off to cool down that little bit more.”

Steve’s comments come as the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office issued a yellow heat health alert for most of England, as temperatures in Derbyshire continue to rise.

The alert indicates that the heat could pose a risk to health, particularly those who are vulnerable.

Steve has today shared the Force’s Working in Hot Weather Policy with members.

He said: “The policy gives advice to staff about working indoors and outdoors, coping with heat stress and heat exhaustion.

“I’ve refreshed people’s memories of that today on our system, to remind them to look after themselves.”

Stay hydrated

And he also called on the public to show understanding towards frontline officers who had stopped for a drink or to cool down.

“Police officers have a very tough job, particularly in the heat,” he said. “We are only human and need to look after ourselves and stay hydrated so that we’re in a position to respond to a call or an emergency.

“If you see an officer having a drink or an ice cream, then please keep that in mind as it could be the first time they’ve had anything to eat or drink while they’ve been on duty, and they might not know where they’re going next and may not have another chance for a drink for a good few hours.”
