Fed members reminded about National Police Memorial Day 2024

25 September 2024

The event is held annually by the Police Remembrance Trust to honour the lives of officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the profession and passed away on duty.

This year, the Memorial Day will take place at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on Sunday (29 September).

While anyone is welcome to come and pay their respects, a large proportion of the attendance will be accounted for by the police family, with hundreds of officers and staff expected to be present.

Keith, who is attending, said: “It will be an honour for me to represent our Federation at the Memorial Day.

“It is such an important moment in the busy world of policing – a time to stop, pause and reflect on all the people who have lost their lives doing the job we all care about.

“It’s so important that they are never forgotten, and I’m sure the service will be the perfect tribute to them.”

The first NMPD was held in 2004 after being established by Joe Holness, a now-retired inspector who served at Kent Police and was driven by the tragic killing of colleague PC Jon Odell four years earlier.

Carrying flags

The 20th edition of the service will start at 2pm this Sunday, with attendees to be seated no later than 1.30pm.

Before that, the day will begin with a parade from George Square involving the Police Scotland and Scottish Federation Pipe Band, who will receive a guard of honour made up of officers from the UK and abroad.

Standard bearers carrying the flags of various forces will also form part of this procession.

Other poignant moments will include a fleet from Police Scotland’s Air Support Unit flying over the Royal Concert Hall at 12.40pm.

Tickets are still available for the event by registering to attend before 11.59pm on today (Wednesday 25 September).

For those unable to attend, highlights of the service will be uploaded to the Police Remembrance Trust website in due course.

The NMPD Tribute Wall can be posted on by anyone wishing to share messages for fallen colleagues and loved ones, and will remain live for a month after this weekend’s proceedings.
