A group of Derbyshire officers who have been nominated for a national Police Bravery Award enjoyed an exclusive reception with the Home Secretary this morning (Thursday 11 July).
The team joined dozens of fellow officers from across the country, each being recognised for their heroic actions.
The reception was attended by Yvette Cooper, along with the new policing minister Diana Johnson DBE and was the first official event hosted by members of the Government since last week’s General Election.
PC Rebecca Callan, who is one of the Derbyshire nominees, said: “It was a real honour to be invited into Downing Street.
“The whole morning was very exciting, and it was lovely to be able to share these moments with loved ones.”
The team were nominated for an award after showing tremendous courage in response to a serious crowd disorder at Aston Villa’s Europa Conference League match at home to Legia Warsaw last November.
Working with colleagues from the West Midlands and Nottinghamshire forces, Rebecca, along with Inspector Nick Booth and PCs Ryan McGrath, Christopher Harrold, Tammy Careless, Adam Podam, Matthew Copestake and Oliver Bates, were all attacked with a variety of missiles, including bottles, bricks and hammers, by Legia supporters as they approached Villa Park before kick-off.
Speaking after this morning’s reception, Chris said: “It’s been a very surreal morning and nice to have a peak behind the scenes at Downing Street.
“Of course, to be there with our loved ones, as well as so many brave colleagues, was very special.”
The nominees, along with secretary of Derbyshire Police Federation and workplace rep Tenielle Hardwick, will be attending the awards ceremony in London tonight.
Chief Constable Rachel Swann and the newly-elected Police and Crime Commissioner, Nicolle Ndiweni, are also set to be there.
The national Police Bravery Awards are held annually and organised by the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW).
