New factsheets are available giving Derbyshire Police Federation members advice on putting in place a will and a power of attorney.

They have been produced by Police Mutual, which provides financial services and welfare support to the police service.

The first factsheet focuses on writing a will.

It includes things to consider when putting together a will, including appointing guardians for any children, funeral details and what you want to happen to pets, as well as who is entitled to inherit from your estate.

And it aims to help you consider questions a lawyer may ask when writing the will, and tips on how often you should review your will.

The second factsheet looks at power of attorney - which gives someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf if you are no longer able to make them yourself, or you don't want to.

In England and Wales there are two main types of power of attorney.

A property and financial affairs lasting power of attorney could cover all aspects of your financial wellbeing, such as managing bank accounts, paying bills, or selling property.

A health and care-lasting power of attorney, meanwhile, decisions are made for you concerning how you will be cared for and the type of treatment you receive.
