Beating testicular cancer: Know Your Balls seminar

15 April 2024

Officers attending a Federation seminar later this month will be given practical guidance on how to perform self-examinations for testicular cancer by medical experts.

The Know Your Balls seminar has been organised as part of Testicular Cancer Awareness Month and will be held online on Wednesday 24 April between 10.30am and 12 noon.

Speakers will explain the importance of men regularly checking themselves to aid early detection and diagnosis.

Former Premier League footballer John Hartson, who was capped 51 times by Wales, will be the special guest speaker having been treated for testicular cancer which had spread to his lungs and brain in 2009.

Former Wales international footballer John Hartson.

John played for Arsenal, West Ham and Wimbledon before heading to Celtic and then becoming assistant coach for the Welsh international side.

After his own diagnosis, he founded the John Hartson Foundation to raise awareness of the symptoms of testicular cancer and therefore help with early detection.

The foundation also helps patients suffering from testicular cancer by providing facilities and support services not normally provided by local authorities, including counselling.

He will be joined at the seminar by the Federation’s men’s health lead Zac Mader, the police service chief medical officer Professor John Harrison and police officer Alison Rowse.

Register to attend the seminar.
