Branch chair Tony Wetton wishes participants in the Light the Lakes event, good luck

13 June 2023

This year’s Light the Lakes event to raise money for Care of Police Survivors (COPS) and remember fallen officers will take place on 23-24 June.

The annual challenge began in 2012 when a retired sergeant decided to raise money for the orphaned children of murdered Surrey DC Heather Cooper. That first event attracted nearly 600 climbers and raised over £30,00 and it has gone from strength to strength every year since.

Derbyshire Federation chair Tony Wetton said: “Light the Lakes should not be underestimated, it is a tough challenge in many ways.

“So, I would like to send our best wishes to all our colleagues taking part. We hope everyone stays safe and well and that the experience is one you’ll remember for a long time.”

Participants will climb the 214 Wainwright fells of the Lake District, including the The Old Man of Coniston which, at 2,600 feet is the highest summit. A blue flare will be lit at that point in memory of police officers and staff who died during service.
