Medal for officers killed on duty moves a step closer

Derbyshire Police Federation chair Tony Wetton says a campaign to honour police officers killed on duty with a posthumous medal is gathering momentum.

Tony was reacting to the news that 26 Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are the latest to back a campaign led by Bryn Hughes and Paul Bone, fathers of Greater Manchester PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone, who were murdered on duty after attending an emergency call in 2012.

The PCCs have added their names to a letter to Home Secretary Suella Braverman endorsing the idea of a police version of the Elizabeth Cross which is awarded to members of the British Armed Forces who are killed in action.

Tony said: “An Elizabeth Medal for police would be a fitting legacy for her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II who exemplified public service during her 70-year reign, as well as honouring brave policemen and women who make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the public.”

Derbyshire Federation is supporting Bryn and Paul’s campaign, which is also backed by the Police Superintendents’ Association.

Tony added: “It is great to see momentum building for this worthy campaign and I hope the Home Secretary will hear our calls and take the necessary action.”
