Add your tribute as part of National Police Memorial Day

Derbyshire Police Federation chair Tony Wetton is encouraging members to add their messages to a tribute wall as part of this year’s National Police Memorial Day.

This year’s service takes place at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast at 2pm on Sunday (25 September). The impact of the pandemic means it will be the first time in two years everyone will be able to attend in person to pay their respects.

The service will include a tribute wall for people to add their own messages remembering fallen colleagues.

Tony, who will represent the Federation branch at the service, said: “There’s still time to add your message and I hope as many of our members as possible will take the chance to do so.

 “The National Police Memorial Day is a key date in the policing calendar and it’s really pleasing that after a couple of years that have been affected by the pandemic, it’s able to go ahead in person this year.

“It’s important that we remember fallen officers, pay our respects, and show our support to their families, friends and colleagues. It is a real honour to represent Derbyshire officers at this service.”

National Police Memorial Day was first held in 2004 and has been held at the end of September each year since. It rotates around England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It provides a dignified and sensitive service of remembrance to honour the courage and ultimate sacrifice of police officers who have been killed or died on duty.

Federation representatives, chief officers and the Home Secretary usually join the families of fallen officers at the service.
