10 September 2021
Today (Friday 10 September) is Suicide Prevention Day and, to coincide, a free downloadable factsheet has been created for members to support officers and their loved ones with their mental health.
The guide includes a number of warning signs that someone you love might be thinking about suicide, including high-risk behaviour, changes in their sleep pattern and people becoming withdrawn.
The fact sheet also offers advice on how you can support someone in that situation, for example, being direct, listening to loved ones and removing all dangers.
There is also information for those who are grieving following a suicide, along with several helplines and websites that people can contact or visit if they need further support.
The guide has been created by Police Mutual, which supports serving and retired officers with their wellbeing and finances.
