Police allowances at Sussex Police are safe, the Chief Constable’s office has confirmed.
As forces around the country scramble to make savings, Sussex jobs are safe after the chief confirmed there will be no reduction in officer or staff members at this time.
Raffaele Cioffi, Chairman of Sussex Police Federation, said: ‘We are pleased to announce that Sussex funding is secured for the next two years, and we are not looking at any changes in allowances. Our Chief is very keen to look elsewhere before affecting the income of officers.
This is good news for our members and good news for the public. If Sussex Police is to continue its upward trajectory, officers need to be properly resourced and reimbursed.’
The good news came as other forces struggle to balance the books. Roles are hanging in the balance at Essex Police where the Chief has warned that all PCSOs and 65 members of police staff were at risk of redundancy amid a £5.3 million shortfall in funding. The Met has also announced it will have to reduce the size of its workforce and Lincolnshire Police said they were ‘exploring options’, including cutting 200 police officer posts by 2029 to meet a £14m funding gap.
Raffaele added: '‘We have been working closely with the force to ensure staffing remains at current levels, and we are pleased to announce that chief officers support our position. While our thoughts are with our colleagues in other forces, we are reassured that, for now, members will not feel the effects of inadequate government funding in their pockets.”
