We are incredibly proud to announce that Sgt Craig Lees and Sgt Matthew Seekings have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards following their courageous actions on the night of 25th May 2024.
That evening, Sussex Police received a report concerning a missing 16-year-old girl, believed to be suicidal. A large-scale search operation was launched.
Using torches, Sgt Lees and Sgt Seekings located the girl more than 50 metres out to sea, in darkness.
It quickly became apparent that she was in serious difficulty, with her head going under the water on several occasions – a clear sign she was at imminent risk of drowning.
Although the Coastguard was called, their estimated time of arrival meant waiting was not an option. With the girl drifting 60 metres out, and light from their torches barely sufficient to maintain visibility, the officers knew that if she went fully under, she would be lost.
Without hesitation, and fully aware of the danger, Sgt Lees and Sgt Seekings made the courageous decision to enter the water. After removing their equipment, they swam out into the sea and successfully reached the girl, bringing her back to shore.
She received immediate medical treatment and was taken to hospital.
There is no doubt that without their swift and selfless actions, this young girl may have lost her life.
