High Court rules forces unable to dismiss officers by removing their vetting

11 February 2025

Statement from Raffaele Cioffi, Chair of Sussex Police Federation, following today’s Judicial Review outcome into vetting-based dismissal of police officers.

Raffaele said: "I am truly heartened by the recent High Court ruling that prevents the dismissal of police officers solely based on vetting procedures.

"This decision underscores the importance of ensuring that any action taken against our dedicated officers is grounded in balanced and thoroughly tested evidence, rather than the subjective judgments of a vetting manager.

"It's reassuring to know that officers who have faced allegations—especially those that have been disproven, resulted in no further action, or led to acquittals—will no longer be unjustly penalised through the withdrawal of vetting clearance.

"This ruling not only safeguards the rights of our officers but also upholds the principles of fairness and justice within our policing system.

"The court's decision mandates the reinstatement of officers who were previously dismissed under these vetting procedures and acknowledges the need for proper regulations to address the dismissal process.

"This ensures that any such actions are compliant with fair trial standards and that our officers are treated with the respect and fairness they deserve.

"This is a significant step forward in maintaining the integrity of our police force while ensuring that good officers, who have been exonerated from allegations, can continue their invaluable service to our communities."
